My Biggest Bow Buck Ever!

It's that time of year again, so we headed out to North Dakota for the archery opener in hopes of getting our hands on some big velvet whitetails! Expectations were high this year as Brennen and Chad had made a trip out 3 weeks ago to scout. What they saw was really promising and after hanging the Reconyx cameras up,  they hit the road to return home.

They then hit the road again this last Tuesday to get out a few days before Opening Day to check cameras and do more scouting.  Ben, Josh and I couldn't get away from work untill late Thursday afternoon.  When we met up with Brennen and Chad, late that night, we got the run down on where the deer have been. It just so happened that on Wednesday night they pulled the truck over on the side of road, right at dark, to run a time-lapse of lightning with camera, from a thunderstorm moving in, when they spotted a good buck in the field next to them. The following morning and evening Chad was able to pattern that buck and it was game on!

Opening Day was on the warm side with temps in the mid 80s and with a marginal wind to hunt that spot. We debated whether to go there or not, but decided to give it a shot. After hanging our stands and getting set up we settled in for a blustery couple of hours. Then at 6:30 the wind died down.  It was like a light switch turned on and the deer were up on their feet.  After seeing a fair amount of deer in the distance we heard one close walking our way. When it appeared only 35yds away, we knew right away it was a good buck! Moments later the buck walked 18 yds right below us. I released the arrow off my Hope and it found its mark, the big buck only made it 40yds. This is the first deer I've harvested with my new Strother Hope, and to top that it's the biggest archery buck for me to date! What a way to start the season.....Rachel
