Lenny's First Filmed Hunt!!!

Lenny got the ball rolling for the Crew on Tuesday morning with his first successfully filmed hunt! This was also the first deer he's taken with his Strother SX-Rush! Lenny joined Way Out Here Outdoors last fall and with many hours logged in the woods and many great encounters, his tag still remained un-punched at the end of the season. During this past summer he got after it, with new strategies and many hours working on food plots and hanging stand sets.  Once again with many hours already logged this year he finally made it happen this morning with a great buck. It was a beautiful cold morning here in Wisconsin when this 8 pt came down a scrape line checking each one looking for a hot doe. Our hats are off to Lenny as his hard work is finally being rewarded.  Be sure to check out Lenny's hunt this Sunday on this week's Webisode!

Wisconsin Youth Hunt

Well, I can’t say that I’ve had this much fun in the beginning of October as I did this last weekend.  It was the two-day Wisconsin Youth Hunt and I was tagging alone with Keegan Savor. To make things better, the weather conditions for this time of year were unbelievable, with the first big cold front of the year coming in. I’ve been lucky to get the opportunity to hunt with Keegan many times in the past for all sorts of game.  Keegan has done very well as a young hunter with multiple Turkeys and a few good bucks on his wall at the age of 12, so I knew I would have my work cut out for me to try and get us on a good buck.
This past summer and early fall Keegan had helped me with all of our food plot tasks. With very poor growing conditions this year, I couldn’t begin to explain how frustrated I was getting with spending countless hours trying to get our food plots up to par. Without Keegan’s help I more than likely wouldn’t have gotten as much done as I did.  So with that in mind I really wanted to get him on a good buck.
Saturday afternoon we checked a couple of our Reconyx cameras in hopes to see a shooter in daylight.  On the first card we pulled we had our first candidate.  It was a 4yr old 11 pt we call “Kenny’s Friend”.  We decided to set up on that deer in a ground blind looking over a ¾ acre clover plot.  As the field filled up with deer we had high expectations the buck would show himself, but as darkness set in we never did see him.
We hunted hard all weekend, morning and night, and with Keegan passing on a lot of deer throughout the hunt, it was Sunday afternoon before we knew it.  We set up in a box blind on a Turnip and Radish food plot mix that was getting a lot of pressure from the deer.  As the night came to an end we saw many doe and fawns that made their way into the plot for a bite to eat.  With only 30 minutes remaining in the hunt Keegan decided to fill his doe tag with very healthy, mature doe.
Even though we didn’t get that big buck we were after, we both had a good time and saw a pile of deer throughout the weekend. I'd like to thank Keegan for letting me come alone on the hunt, and I wouldn’t count Keegan out on filling one or both of his buck tags with a good deer this year. We have plans on heading to the woods in a couple weeks with his bow in hand to do just that.  Stay tuned to the blog for updates on all our hunting action!!!
