Opening Day Success

Lets just start by saying... it never happens like this.  Opening morning of Wisconsin's Rifle season and I have a buck down by 10a.m. I've hunted every opening morning here in Wisconsin since I was 12 years old and only 3 times I can now say I've shot a buck on opening day.  It just doesn't happen.  But this morning I found myself staring down a 5 or 6 1/2 year old thru the crosshairs. This was a buck I called the "Big Ten".  Throughout the fall I've captured pictures of this particular deer and he was definitely one of the best bucks on the property I was hunting this morning.  There was one thing lingering in the back of my mind though, I hadn't captured any pictures of this deer nor have I seen him since October 20th.  As he came into an opening after chasing a doe I had no idea it was him.  All I saw was, it was a mature animal with some very impressive head gear.  Needless to say, as I walked up on him I was very surprised to see it was the "Big Ten". I made a good shot and only upon recovery did I realize which deer it was.
To make this an even better day, my dad calls me shortly after I had shot my buck and said he has one down as well. He said it was a very nice 11pt. After he sent me a picture of the deer, I instantly knew who it was, and I was shocked.  He had just taken a 7 1/2 year old ghost I call "Banana Splits" due to his forked G2s and tines as thick as bananas. This deer has hung around sporting his forked G2s since he was 3 1/2. Only capturing a small hand-full of pictures each year without any encounters, I never thought we'd get a chance at him.
Growing up, my introduction and obsession for the outdoors came from my father.  Tagging along with him at an early age we bird hunted and deer hunted on the weekends throughout the fall.  I really couldn't imagine having it any other way.  So to have us both tag out on great bucks on the first day of the Rifle Opener is something truly special.  There's one more thing that makes this day so special as well;  after taping these two studs,  his came out at 169 7/8" his largest buck ever.  Mine came in at 157 7/8 this is also my biggest buck to date.  This will be a day I never will forget!!!

Lenny Connects in Kansas 11.13.12

Chad and I packed the truck and hit the road headed to kansas early Saturday morning November 10th. We arrived to 75 degrees and 30 mph South winds so we didn't stay in stand very long that afternoon.  Saturday night a large storm front rolled through the area lowering temps by 45 degrees.  On Sunday we set up and were covered up with deer most of the day including a couple nice bucks just passing outside of bow range.  One 9 pt we saw 3 times and we elected to pass on him. The weather started to warm up and the deer movement slowed over the next couple days.  Chad and I checked the Reconyx cameras mid morning on Tuesday and saw that a couple nice bucks were moving through on other side of property from where we had been set up. We grabbed an early lunch and headed to stand at 12:30 for the afternoon.  There was no movement for next 2 hrs. Then just like we drew it up, Chad noticed antlers coming right at us.  We instantly recognized the buck as split brow tine buck we had on the Reconyx camera 300 yards to our East. He walked down the trail to 17 yards where I let the Strother SX-Rush eat!!  The ramcat broaudhead fired from my Strother worked perfectly as the 12pt buck only went 20 yards before expiring. Chalk another one up for the Reconyx Cameras! This is my first whitetail harvested in Kansas and it was an awesome hunt!!
